  • PRINT INSTRUCTIONS

    printer setup instructions

this doesn't cover everything ever, and also i'm on windows 11; if you don't see the same thing i do, that's fine! just try to emulate what i'm doing. i'll point out the most important things in bold, and also there's plenty of red arrows to help guide your way!

    1. in your browser, open the pdf, and hit ctrl/cmd p to open up the print menu. select "print using system dialogue". don't worry about any settings on this page.

    2. when this screen appears, navigate to more settings. don't worry about any settings on this page.

    3. on this page, enable 'duplex printing' if u have it, and ensure your paper size is correct. this zine is set up in a4 size, but will print just fine (i checked!) in us american letter size. if you don't have duplex printing, erm... i can't help with that. sorry!

    4. navigate to 'page setup' along the top (sorry for no red arrow), and make sure you have, again, duplex printing enabled. make sure you have short-side stapling enabled. if you don't have this, your pages will not print out correctly!

    zine assembly instructions

yay! your printer is now set up. so, like... how do you assemble it, though?

it's super easy, i promise, and i'll take you through it in detail.

    1. ensure you have all your pages, front and back.

i'm also using this step to clarify that, for the purposes of this tutorial, i'm using my test print. i'm not too concerned with the quality of it, so i don't mind having creases from my grubby little fingers and whatnot. you can take however much time and care as you wish!

    2. cut everything out. i have a paper guillotine, but it's fine if you just use a pair of scissors or whatever. this is a zine, not a magazine. it's supposed to look homemade and imperfect. that's part of making it your own!.

    3. put all your pages in order. the easiest way for me to do this is to pay attention to the even numbers, and stack them until you find the middle.

    4. you can end things here with just stapling the spine; i don't own a stapler, so i can't demonstrate. oops!

instead, i'll be doing a quick and easy binding method, called the pamplet or saddleback stitch. all you need is needle and thread; if you don't have a needle, you can use the bent off end of a paperclip with thread glued to it, and if you don't have thicker thread, you can double up thinner thread, or use something sturdy like dental floss. since i'm a fucking nerd, i'm using embroidery floss and a curved needle, but you don't need those necessarily!

also, if a video tutorial would be easier, here's one: Paper Tip: How to Make a 3 Hole Pamphlet Stitch.

    5. mark and stab three holes into the spine. i just eyeballed my placement, but you can measure if you want.

    6. poke holes through each of those holes. you can use your needle, but i find it easier to use a pushpin.

    7. measure out your thread. i tripled the spine of my zine, and that was more than enough to work with.

    8. stab through the middle. do not pull the thread all the way through; leave a tail that's long enough to tie off later (so, like, about 4-5 inches, or 34cm or so.)

    9. on the inside of the zine, go into the top hole, and pull your needle through to the outside of the zine. ensure your thread is taut.

    10. go all the way to the bottom hole, and pull your needle through, back inside the zine.

    11. this is the trickiest part, but enter, from the inside, into the center hole. try to keep the two threads inside the same hole seperate; don't pierce the one that's already there!

once through, place each thread on the other side of the spine, as seen.

    12. tie off the ends and you're done! i like to put mine in a bow, lol.
